Menopause
At Scotia Clinic, we offer a specialised menopause clinic led by Dr McCaffrey and Nurse Estelle, who has specialist training in this area. We understand that while Menopause is a natural process, its symptoms can impact people’s lives and health. These symptoms may include headaches, night sweats, hot flushes, depression, vaginal dryness/painful intercourse.
What happens at a Menopause Clinic appointment?
At your first appointment, you will initially meet with our nurse, who will take a detailed medical history and discuss your symptoms and overall quality of life. You will also receive guidance on diet and lifestyle, and, where appropriate, blood tests may be arranged to assess your hormone levels.
Following this, you will meet with Dr. McCaffrey, who will review your history, discuss your symptoms and work with you to develop a personalised treatment plan.
We are very focused on bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis. If appropriate, we may perform a FRAX assessment to evaluate your risk of fracture or arrange a DEXA scan to measure bone density.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
There has been a lot of discussion around hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in recent years. However, organisations usch as The British Menopause Society confirm that HRT us is safe for women when prescirbed appropriately.
We will discuss all available options with you, carefully considering the benefits and risks, before recomending a personalised treatment plan.
Premature menopause
Premature menopause occurs when menopause happens naturally before the age of 45. It can carry additional health considerations including an increased risk of osteoporosis, cardio vascular disease and dementia. Early assessement and treatement are important to help protect long-term health, and we will guide you through the most appropriate options for your individual needs.
